Set up the Safari extension
Updated July 29, 2026
The Safari extension tracks your time on each site to count toward your daily limits. It also catches tabs you already have open that become locked. Site blocking itself works in every browser either way — the extension isn't required for blocking.
Enable it
In Descreened, go to Settings, then Safari Extension. The screen walks you through these steps, with an Open Safari Settings shortcut:
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap Apps, then Safari.
- Tap Extensions.
- Tap Descreened.
- Turn on the top switch. Grayed out? Go back to Descreened's Safari Extension screen and pause blocking first — see Safari extension switches grayed out.
- Under Permissions, set Other Websites to Allow.
Setting Other Websites to Allow is what lets the extension count time on every site, not just a few.
Confirm it's working
- Open Safari and browse any site for about 30 seconds.
- Return to the Safari Extension screen in Descreened.
- The status row should read Extension active just now with a green dot.
When it's working, you'll see: "Safari time is being recorded and counts toward your site limits."
If the status doesn't update
- Safari may ask Always Allow or Allow for One Day the first time — choose Always Allow.
- On a new device — or right after updating Descreened — quit and reopen Safari. Safari can hold on to the old version of the extension after an app update, which stops tracking until Safari restarts.
- Give it a moment: edits can take up to 10 seconds to reach Safari.
Tip: The status row shows the last time the extension reported in. iOS gives no way to check the switch itself, so a stale status after a day of browsing means the extension got turned off.
